A friend mentioned E.W. Hornung (including the fact that he was friend and brother-in-law to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle). Browsing titles, I got intrigued by The Camera Fiend, in spite of the lack of introduction. Through the first chapter or two, I had no clue what kind of book it was supposed to be. My first guess was to place it in the genre of humour, but soon the story started taking unexpected twists and turns. Actually a lot of the charm lies in the surprise elements, and not knowing where it may be going next, so I'll refrain from giving away too much. The main character is an asthmatic young man (the word teenager was not yet invented when the book was written!), Tony "Pocket" Upton, on leave from boarding school for a couple of days to go into London to see a specialist doctor about his asthma medication. His intention to stay the night with friends does not turn out quite as planned... and from there on, trouble escalates in ways he'd never been able to imagine. The book turned out quite a pageturner, including a suspicious death or two (or more), a professor interested in photography and spiritualism, a young girl, and a private investigator with assistant.

Have not had time to read
I don't know how old this book is, but the language seems dated. A good mystery nonetheless.
Loved the story, hated the writing style. As many of the British authors do, they write in a clinical style that gives the novel a textbook feel. Hard to garner any emotion for any characters or the story itself. If you need style to keep you engaged, don't bother with this book. If you like a good story that doesn't cost any money, go for it.
